Updates to UPP’s Member Privacy Statement

UPP’s updated Member Privacy Statement takes effect October 2025, with clearer details on employer data sharing and anonymized AI use.

At UPP, protecting your personal information remains a top priority. We’ve updated our Member Privacy Statement to give you more clarity about how your personal information is used, and the choices you have as a member. The updates take effect in October 2025.

1. Limited data sharing with your employer

Your pension is part of your overall employment relationship with your employer. When universities and other organizations administered their own pension plans, they had access to certain pension-related information about their employees. This update ensures your employer continues to have access to the same type of information they’ve had in the past, allowing them to continue carrying out necessary functions such as supporting retirement planning, managing workforce and succession needs, and administering employer-sponsored benefit programs, such as bridge benefits and supplementary retirement arrangements.

  • This sharing is strictly limited to information your employer originally provided to UPP, or information derived from it, for example, your plan enrolment date, total accrued service, and earlier unreduced retirement dates.
  • Information you provide directly to UPP, such as updates you make in the myUPP Member Portal or questions you ask us, is never shared without your consent.
  • You can opt out of this additional sharing if you wish.

2. Use of AI tools

To better understand how well we are serving members, we will gather insights across all platforms and touchpoints. The updated privacy statement also clarifies that AI tools may assist with this analysis, always with strict privacy safeguards. Before any data is analyzed using AI tools, information is anonymized or de-identified (identifying details, such as name, contact information, or member ID are removed). The remaining data is combined with information from many members, so we only see patterns and trends, never individual records.

Unless UPP has your explicit consent, AI will not be used to make decisions about individual members, and is always subject to UPP’s privacy and governance safeguards. This helps us improve your experience and the services we offer, while keeping your personal information safe and private.

What's not changing

  • UPP only uses your information for the purposes of administering the Plan, and never discloses or sells your personal information.
  • Your information is always protected by strong security measures—whether managed directly by UPP or by trusted service providers.
